Indian head massage is one of the most popular holistic therapies and has been hailed as the therapy of the twentieth century.
Authentic Indian Head Massage is an Ayurvedic form of mental health healing, which relaxes and harmonises the body’s natural balance, in turn promoting physical, psychological and emotional well-being.

How does Indian Head Massage help you?
By reducing muscular and nervous tension, Indian Head massage can improve circulation which has the knock-on effect of detoxifying the body, leaving a feeling of tranquillity peace and calm.
It is carried out in a seated position in a sacred healing space with accompanying music in the background to promote relaxation. The treatment is normally carried out over clothing and covers the following areas:
- Upper back/arms the upper back is worked on using techniques which help relax and comfort you, as well as release tension from the trapezius muscle.
- Neck – a slightly gentler approach is taken here, as this is generally the area prone to hold tension, which causes stiffness and aching.
- Scalp as well as releasing tension out of muscle we also consider the tension that is held in the bones.
- Face/Ears a much gentler approach is used here as finishing off the massage, which can leave the client relaxed and balanced.
The techniques used are designed in a way to relax and stimulate without any harsh or
brash moves. At no time should the client feel uncomfortable or uneasy. The client has both feet on the floor with their eyes closed and should begin with a few deep breaths. The therapist only speaks to the client to check on the level of comfort or if a problem arises.
As an alternative, an oil scalp massage can be received, which is more of an invigorating massage and promotes stimulation and increased circulation to the scalp.
What to expect from an Indian Head Massage treatment:
A full Indian head massage treatment should include the following:
- An initial medical consultation, outlining any reason why the treatment should be adapted or your GP’s permission is required. This can take up to half an hour.
- You will receive complete treatment which includes the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, face and ears unless there is a need to adapt your treatment based on the consultation.
- After the treatment, you will receive aftercare advice and a full explanation of any contra-actions that could present after the session.
- This whole process may take up to an hour and a half depending on the depth of consultation and treatment protocol applied. If adaptation is necessary then the timing of the treatment will be different. The oil scalp massage will be shorter due to the vigorous techniques used.
