According to the Office for National Statistics and NHS England:
Adults:
Approximately 1 in 6 adults in Great Britain reported moderate to severe depressive symptoms (16%) in autumn 2022. Office for National Statistics
Adults aged 16-29 show the highest prevalence: ~28% experienced moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Office for National Statistics
Disabled adults (35%) and unpaid carers working 35+ hours per week (37%) also show much higher rates. Priory+1
Children & Young People:
In 2023, about 1 in 5 young people aged 8 to 25 in England had a probable mental disorder. NHS England Digital+1
For ages 8-16, the figure was ~20.3%; for 17-19 it was ~23.3%; for 20-25 it was ~21.7%. NHS England Digital+1
Among 11-16 year-olds, depression and anxiety (emotional disorders) are among the most common mental health issues. Place2Be+2www.rcpsych.ac.uk+2
Half of all mental health issues are established by age 14, and about 75% by age 24
Although treatment and care for depression are improving, there are still many people who suffer on a day-to-day basis.
Depression Is Associated with Other Illnesses
To make matters even worse, depression is often associated with other illnesses. For example, patients with depression are 64% more likely to develop coronary artery disease.
Likewise, depression is commonly found in patients with cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s, and eating disorders. The relationship between depression and other serious illnesses shows just how serious depression can be and how it creeps into many phases of life.
To make matters worse, depression can infiltrate one’s life so much that it eventually leads to suicide.
In 2023, there were 7,055 registered deaths by suicide in the UK. House of Commons Library+1
In England and Wales alone, that number was 6,069 suicides in 2023. Office for National Statistics+1
For adults aged 16-74, the proportion reporting suicidal thoughts in the past year increased to 6.7% in 2023/4 (up from 3.8% in 2000). NHS England Digital
The proportion who made a suicide attempt in that same group was about 1.0% in 2023/4. NHS England Digital
In the UK (2023) there were 7,055 suicides.
In the same year, police recorded 602 homicide victims in England and Wales. (ONS)
That means there were over 11 suicides for every 1 homicide in the UK.
Depression Makes You Feel Hopeless
One feeling that is often associated with depression and suicide is hopelessness, but many others experience hopelessness, too.
Hopelessness turns into a vicious cycle that makes people feel unable to control themselves, their behaviours, and the world around them.
Although, indeed, you cannot control the world around you, YOU CAN control yourself.
In fact, it is completely possible to gain control of your life and create the best life possible through your actions. For those who feel hopeless about their life, this may feel like an unattainable goal, but it is one that you can reach with the right help and action.
How do you go about it?
I’ve written a guide that will help you get started.
